George Washington's Dentures

George Washington's dentures were fitted with two springs at the sides which were supposed to support the upper dentures as he spoke, smiled and laughed. Unfortunately, the springs were far too weak and Washington was limited to a pouting smile.

 

While wearing his dentures, his speech was confined to short words especially those without "s" sounds and he could not eat any foods that needed to be chewed. This made formal functions and presidential affairs very difficult for him as he was embarrassed by his dental problems.
